Greek police clash with Armenian demonstrators outside Turkish consulate

THESSALONIKI, Greece: Riot police clashed briefly with demonstrators outside the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki Tuesday, during a protest over the mass killings of Armenians by Turks =n the early 20th century.

Police said =ome 200 Greek Armenian protesters tried to break past a police cordon outside =he consulate building. No injuries or arrests were =eported.

Demonstrators =hanted slogans and burnt a Turkish flag during the protest, held to commemorate the =assacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1919 in what is now =astern Turkey.

Many countries, including Russia and France, have officially recognized the event as genocide. A resolution pending =efore the U.S. Congress that would accuse Ottoman Turks of committing genocide has prompted warnings from Ankara that its =assage would harm relations with Washington
