ARMENIAN STUDIES PROGRAM, CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, FRESNO AND NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR ARMENIAN STUDIES AND RESEARCH
by Prof. George Bournoutian
Prof. of East European and Middle Eastern Studies Iona College, NY Currently Kazan Visiting Prof. in Armenian Studies CSU Fresno
In this, the first of three public lectures in Fresno during the winter/spring semester, Prof. George Bournoutian will discuss the role of Etchmiadzin vis-à- vis the various Persian rulers after Erevan was conquered by Persia from the Ottomans. The political, social, and economic dealings of the Church with the Persian shahs and governors will be examined thoroughly.
A vital source of information on this period is Jambr, a volume compiled by Catholicos Siméon of Erevan.
After assuming the leadership of the Armenian Church in 1763, Siméon gathered all the documents and manuscripts which were in the Etchmiadzin archives and, after examining them, compiled Jambr, Siméon's term for "archival chamber." Prof. Bournoutian has just published the first English translation, with extensive annotations, of this important work, as part of Mazda's Armenian Studies Series.
This enormous work (some 500 pages in Bournoutian's edition) provides a wealth of other information that might otherwise have been lost and is one of the most important primary sources on the history of the Armenian Church, as well as the history of Armenia under Muslim rule.
Dr. George Bournoutian is the author or translator of numerous other books, including A Concise
History of the Armenian People, Two Chronicles on the History of Karabagh, The Travel Accounts of Simeon of Poland, and Tigran II and Rome.
Jambr will be available for purchase and signing by Dr. Bournoutian.
