12 march 2010- NEW YORK TIMES' ONLY ARMENIAN SCRIBE OFFERS A TIMID MEA CULPA
http://www.centerarnews.com/
A few days ago I commented on the House Foreign Affairs Committee passage of the resolution condemning the Armenian genocide. I generally sided with those who said that the resolution was a bad idea, on the ground that 1.) Congress has better things to do than arbitrate history; and, 2.) instead of helping Armenians, the resolution might get in the way of a Turkish/Armenian thaw that is the most important geopolitical game in the region at the moment.

AFTER RECOGNITION, TURKEY RECALLS AMBASSADOR TO SWEDEN
Turkey has withdrawn its ambassador to Sweden after the parliament voted narrowly to describe as genocide the killing of Armenians in World War I. The Turkish government condemned the resolution, saying it was "based upon major errors and without foundation". The Swedish government opposed the opposition resolution but it passed by one vote after some MPs voted against party lines.

Swedish Parliament Recognizes the Armenian Genocide
The Swedish Parliament decided Thursday with a razor thin margin that the the massacre of Armenians and other ethnic groups in 1915 was a genocide. The vote was 131 to 130. The government's line was to not classify the massacre of, among others, Assyrians and Armenians, as genocide as it should not be up to politicians to write history. The Parliament however disagreed and Sweden joins other countries such as France, Russia, and Argentina that have recognized the historical truth.

Obama Should Recall Ambassador to Turkey
Isn't threatening our troops by denyiing them landing rights at Incirlik airport in Turkey a more egrigious act than a U.S. Congressional Committee Recognizing the Armenian Genocide with a non-binding resolution? Turkey last week recalled its ambassador to protest the passage of H.R. 252. Perhaps it is time we recalled our ambassador in response to blatant Turkish blackmail. And, oh, yes, Turkey today recalled its ambassador to Sweden when the latter's parliament recognized that same Genocide. Perhaps Sweden should recall its ambassador too. I have never encountered a country more thin-skinned than Turkey.

Turkish Official: Ratifying Armenia Protocols Currently 'Almost Impossible'
An official in Turkey's ruling party says Ankara is extremely unlikely to ratify its fence-mending protocols with Armenia at this juncture, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports. Justice and Development Party Deputy Chairman Suat Kiniklioglu was speaking today on the sidelines of an international seminar organized by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan. He told RFE/RL that Ankara continues to peg the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations to a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Jewish Lobby Sits Out Vote On Armenian Genocide
Deteriorating relations between Turkey and Israel led Jewish groups to step back from active lobbying this year against a congressional resolution declaring the 1915 Turkish slaughter of Armenians a case of genocide. For decades, Armenian-American groups have pushed the resolution, which on March 4 narrowly passed the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, sparking a harsh backlash by Turkey. Some Jewish members of Congress have been among its prominent supporters. But Jewish organizations have marshaled their political clout and moral capital on the issue of genocide to lobby Capitol Hill against the resolution in years past, moved in large part by Turkish warnings that its passage could harm Turkish-Israeli ties.

TURKEY PUNISHES AMERICA: Envoy not to return to the U.S. until Armenia signal
Turkey said on Tuesday it will not send its ambassador back to Washington until it gets a "clear sign" on the fate of a U.S. resolution branding the 1915-era killings of Armenians by Turkish forces as "genocide." NATO member Turkey, a pivotal U.S. ally, was infuriated and recalled its envoy after a U.S. House panel last week approved the non-binding measure condemning the killings.

Neighbors / Who's in favor of Turkey?
The shock waves generated when the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs passed a bill defining the 1915 massacre of the Armenians as genocide did not stop at Turkey's shores. There have also been many ripples in the corridors of the Jewish lobby in Washington.

Israel will hold all of Lebanon responsible for any Hizbullah attack
Israel will not launch an assault on southern Lebanon but will retaliate indiscriminately should it be provoked, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Tuesday. Addressing high school students in northern Israel, Barak dampened previous bellicose rhetoric on future conflicts with Lebanon’s Hizbullah. “We are not looking for confrontations. Israel will not initiate attacks in the northern area but we are strong and deterring,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Barak as saying.
