The enforcement of human rights and the rule of law is among Armenia’s main domestic challenges and Mr Harutunyan’s role in is fundamental in this respect. His unique experience and his views should be valuable to all those with an interest in the development of Armenia or in other countries with comparable challenges - particularly other “Eastern Partnership” countries.
The mission of the Human Rights Defender is to formulate an expert legal opinion on the actions of public authorities in Armenia and on the conformity of new legislation with the constitution and with human rights standards. His statements have provided a much needed anchor of public debate on matters relating to democracy and the rule of law, thanks in no small part to his independence from all political forces and through his legal competence.
On the occasion of his visit from November 15 to November 18, 2010 in Brussels, Mr Haurtyunyan will participate in the joint AGBU Europe and EFOA round table /lunch time briefing on November 16 at 1pm to 2pm. This event will focus on the state of democracy and human rights in Armenia, particularly in the context of the intensifying EU-Armenia relations. Many other meetings with European Parliamentarians will be scheduled and organized by AGBU Europe.
