Armenian President Meet ; Alemanno and Giorgio Napoletano

Dec. 13, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan who is on a working visit to Italy, held a meeting with his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano.
The Armenian leader noted he fondly recalled his visit to Italy on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Italian unification and participation in the celebrations.

The Armenian president noted that the Venice exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of Armenian book-printing was being held under President Giorgio Napolitano's auspices. In this context, the Italian leader said that Venice-based Armenians had attached high importance to educational and cultural development. There are no impediments to closer relations between the two nations, he said. The sides expressed the confidence that the Armenian leader's working visit to Italy was an opportunity for holding high-level discussions of bilateral relations and outlining new and promising areas of bilateral cooperation. Among such areas are alternative and nuclear energy.
The Armenian president invited Italian companies to participate in programs implemented in Armenia, including a new NPP construction project, given Italy's experience in the field.
With respect to development of bilateral economic cooperation, the Armenian and Italian leaders pointed out the importance of frequent business contacts and of business conferences. At their Dec. 13 morning meeting, the Armenian and Italian FMs reached relevant agreements. President Giorgio Napolitano expressed hope that the Armenian president's meeting with Italian businessmen would give impetus to Italian investments in Armenia's economy for further development of bilateral economic cooperation.

The Armenian and Italian presidents also discussed Armenia-EU cooperation, regional problems, particularly the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

President Serzh Sargsyan is also scheduled to meet with Mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno, attend the unveiling ceremony of an Armenian khachkar (cross-stone) at Palazzo Braschi and visit the 'Dvin - armenian capital between Europe and Asia' exhibition.

The Armenian leader's visit agenda envisages meetings with Gianfranco Fini, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Riccardo Migliori, Head of the Italian delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and representatives of Italy's business community.

Armenia-EU cooperation program for 2012-2013 ready

Dec. 14, Chairman of Armenia's National Security Council Artur Baghdasaryan and the newly appointed head of the EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Traian Hristea co-chaired the 8th sitting of the EU Advisory Group Board.

Participating in the sitting were also representatives of Armenia's government agencies, experts of the EU Advisory Group, EU member-states' ambassadors to Armenia, executives of UN, OSCE and other international agencies' offices in Armenia.In his opening speech, Artur Baghdasaryan expressed hope that Ambassador Traian Hristea will contribute to the Armenia-EU cooperation.
Armenia is among the active participants in the Eastern Partnership project, with reforms implemented on schedule in the country, Baghdasaryan said. He pointed out successful completion of the Armenia-EU cooperation program for 2009-2011 and said that an Armenia-EU Advisory Group joint cooperation program for 2012-2013 has been drafted. The program has been sent out to all the relevant agencies, and at its sitting early in 2012 the RA National Security Council is expected to discuss it and submit it to the Armenian president for ratification.
Ambassador Traian Hristea expressed his gratitude for the invitation to co-chair the sitting of the EU Advisory Group Board and participate in the discussions. He re-affirmed his willingness to contribute to development of the Armenia-EU relations.
French Ambassador to Armenia Henri Reynaud and German Ambassador to Armenia Hans-Jochen Schmidt made a high appraisal of the Armenia-EU cooperation.
Head of the EU Advisory Group Antti Hartikainen presented a report on the Group's activities in the last three months of 2011, and planned activities for the first three months of 2012.
