BRITISH-ARMENIAN AUTHOR MAKES DEBUT WITH NEW NOVEL ABOUT HER GRANDMOTHER
Affinity with Night Skies: Astra Sabondjian's Story is a new biographical novel by British Armenian author, Astrid Katcharyan. Her book was just published by Taderon Press and released in London to great acclaim. Affinity with Night Skies is the true story of an extraordinary woman born in Garin (Erzeroum) in Ottoman Armenia. She spent most of her childhood in Smyrna, where she was active in community life, especially in journalism. She and her husband survived the 1915 Genocide in Konia under remarkable circumstances, and they returned to their home in Smyrna in 1918. Astra witnessed the burning of Smyrna in 1922, when her husband was killed under tragic circumstances. She fled to Athens with her children, where she began life as a refugee, amongst tens of thousands of other Greek refugees from Ottoman Turkey. However, she managed to become a successful fashion designer, while raising a family. The German occupation of Greece during World War II brought new challenges, and Astra and her children moved to Vienna and then Venice.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Astrid Katcharyan was born in London of Armenian parents. She spent her early years in Venice, where her family still live. She graduated from London University and currently works at the University of the Arts, London. She has published a book on careers in the fashion industry and this is her first narrative work.
