ARTSAKH POLITICAL PARTIES SEEK
INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION
Panorama.am 18:21 13/03/2008 - The three political groups of Nagorno Karabakh Republic "Democracy", "Fatherland", and "ARF-Dashnaktsoutiun Movement 88" came forward with an announcement after the declaration of independence of Kosovo. The deputies of the NKR National Assembly expressed their support to the contribution of freedom right and greeted the international society's position for respecting the majority population of Kosovo.
The announcement says: "For decades the Azeri authorities were carrying out a policy of discrimination, limiting civil rights, purging the ethnic groups, and violated emigration activities. It was possible to prevent the tragedy and its results only through organised self-protection activities."
The deputies said that they hope through negotiations they will reach the world wide recognition of the freedom of Nagorno Karabagh Republic.
UN TELLS ARMENIA TO GET OUT OF AZERBAIJAN
UNITED NATIONS, March 14 (Reuters) - The U.N. General Assembly on Friday
demanded that Armenian forces withdraw from all occupied territories in
Azerbaijan, but key mediators in the Azeri-Armenia dispute rejected the
non-binding resolution.
In an Azeri-drafted resolution, the assembly called for "the immediate,
complete and unconditional withdrawal from all the occupied territories
of the Republic of Azerbaijan."
Although the largely symbolic resolution was adopted, only 39 out of 192
members of the U.N. General Assembly voted for it. Seven countries, including Armenia, the United States, France and Russia, voted against it.
There were 100 abstentions and many other countries chose not to Participate in the vote, which Western diplomats said was a reflection of the fact that most people felt the Azeri resolution was not a balanced picture of th e problem.
"This resolution was not helpful," said a diplomat from one of the three co-chairs of the Minsk Group -- Russia, the United States and France.
The Minsk Group is a committee of countries working to bring about a peaceful resolution of the disagreement over Nagorno-Karabakh, the disputed Caucasus mountain enclave. The group was established by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 1992.
A U.S. statement on the resolution said the three Minsk Group co-chairs all voted against the resolution because they agreed it represented a "unilateral" view of the dispute.
European Union president Slovenia issued a statement that said the Minsk
Group should continue to deal with the issue.
"The EU calls on the parties concerned to avoid any actions which could lead to heightened tensions and which could undermine the on going mediation efforts," it said.
Last week Azeri President Ilham Aliyev said Kosovo's newly declared independence from Serbia had emboldened Armenian separatists in Azerbaijan's mountainous enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Both Armenia and Azerbaijan have accused each other of stoking the
recent violence there.
MOVE TO BAN RULING TURKISH PARTY
Turkey's chief prosecutor has asked the Constitutional Court to ban the governing AK Party, accusing it of anti-secular activities.
BBC - Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya said he believed that there was enough evidence to show the party had been contravening Turkey's secular constitution.
The AK Party, which has Islamist roots, won last year's general elections.
So any move to close it will be extremely controversial, the BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Istanbul says.
Headscarf controversy
The AKP is already locked in a battle with Turkey's secular elite, backed by the powerful military, over recent changes on the headscarf issue.
The Constitutional Court is reviewing an appeal by the main pro-secular opposition party on the validity of parliament's constitutional amendments in February to allow women wear Islamic head-scarves at universities.
The AKP has argued that the headscarf ban unfairly bars large numbers of girls from higher education in a nation where about 66% of women wear the scarf.
Many secularists in the country equate the wearing of the headscarf with political Islam. In a surprise announcement, Mr Yalcinkaya, the chief prosecutor at the Court of Appeals, said he had filed a court request for the closure of the AKP.
He also revealed that the party had been under investigation for six months.
; Speaking on Turkish television later on Friday, an AKP lawmaker said he was shocked at the news. The lawmaker said that senior party officials and lawyers were now holding an emergency meeting in the capital Ankara.
The AKP has its roots in an Islamist party that has been banned.
But the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan - which is negotiating for Turkey to join the EU - has always insisted that its political views have changed.
EASTER ALREADY ! BLAME IT ON THE BISHOPS
The Independent, UK - Annoyed that Easter is so early this year? Family life complicated by school and religious holidays being separated? Today, we name and shame the men responsible. Step forward Aristakes of Armenia, Protogenes of
Sardica, Spyridion of Trimythous, and Eusebius of Caesarea. It was they, and several hundred other bishops, who decided at a meeting 1,683 years ago how we should lead our leisure lives today.
The Council of Nicea in AD325, to which all the leading clerics of the Christian world were invited, had been called by the Roman Emperor Constantine, and it had three main results: 1) the Nicene Creed (the first unified Christian doctrine); 2) providing an early and convincing-sounding Christian event for Dan Brown to misrepresent in The Da Vinci Code; and 3) determining when Easter falls.
Before Nicea, this was tied to the Jewish feast of Passover. After it, the day was set as the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal (spring) equinox. This latter event, something of a movable feast in those days, is now fixed on 21 March. Thus, the earliest that Easter Sunday can be is 22 March, the latest, 25 April. This year's date of 23 March is the earliest since 1913, and none of us will see its like again, the next such occurrence being in 2160.
Of course, things could be simpler, as the Easter Act, passed by Parliament as long ago as 1928, tried to ensure. This said that Easter should fall on the first Sunday after the second Saturday in April. However, since this also required the agreement of the churches, it has never come into force. Time, maybe, for another Council of Nicea.
